An ancient Native America tribe called the Ojibwe (also known as the Chippewa) were the first culture to use a dreamcatcher or as they call them ‘asabikeshiinh’ (roughly translated to mean spider).

Legend has it that Asibikaashi, a Spider-Woman, took care of all the people and children on her land. As the Ojibwe Nation spread to the different corners of North America, Asibikaashi found it too difficult to protect all of her children.

To help ward off evil spirits and protect her people, Asibikaashi had the maternal figures of the tribe craft dreamcatchers as a way to protect those who are near them both while they were awake and also sleeping.

How it works

The circular frame represents the continuous flow of life (or the circle of life) as there is no start nor end. It also symbolizes Mother Earth and everything else that sustains life.

The inner circle is where the evil spirits are caught and then safely dispersed. It acts as a ‘spider web’ trapping the bad dreams or visions while allowing the good ones to filter through the feathers to the person below.
