Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens portrays Peter as an infant who sneaks out of his London home and makes his way into Kensington Gardens. Peter understands that all infants were once birds, and believes he still has flying capabilities. When he arrives in Kensington Gardens it is closed, and the fairies who reside there are able to roam about freely. Peter Pan meets a crow who informs him that, in fact, Peter is no longer a bird and cannot fly. Only able to get about on foot, Peter Pan constructs a boat out of a thrush’s nest to navigate the Serpentine River, which runs through the gardens. Seemingly stranded there, Peter makes friends with the fairies and the birds. He also meets Maimie, a girl lost in the gardens. (The famous J.M. Barrie character, Wendy, is considered to be based on Peter Pan’s first love, Maimie.) Eventually, the fairies take pity on Peter and help him return to his mother. But Peter Pan feels torn between his two homes: Kensington Gardens and his house in London. Where will he choose to stay?
Considered a prequel to Peter and Wendy, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is the beginning of the story about the boy who refused to grow up. Barrie transforms London and Kensington Gardens into a magical, fantastical place, full of adventure, reveries, and fairy-lands, where a boy can play and let his imagination soar.
