“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times:†Thus begins one of Dickens most famous novels, A Tale of Two Cities. The two cities are of course London and Paris and the novel takes place during the tumultuous time leading up to the Revolutionary War. The novel contains three books: Recalled to Life, The Golden Thread, and The Track of a Storm. A tale that includes a graphic depiction of the uprising of the working class, an interesting love triangle, and multiple exciting courtroom scenes, A Tale of Two Cities has remained a Dickens favorite since its publication.
The story follows Dr. Alexandre Manette, a French doctor just released from the Bastille. Driven mad by eighteen years in confinement, he regains his sanity after he is reunited with his daughter, Lucie. Lucie is in love with Charles Darnay, a French aristocrat who sympathizes with the plights of the lower classes. At the start of Book 2, Darnay is on trial in England for treason. He is acquitted when his lawyer’s drunken colleague, Carton, points out his and Darnay’s remarkable resemblance. The jury acquits Darnay after they are convinced he was wrongly identified by the witness. Carton is also in love with Lucie; a complicated love triangle commences as well as a struggle against an aristocracy that literally tramples upon the impoverished citizens of France and England.
A Tale of Two Cities has been adapted into countless films, radio productions, theatrical productions, television series, and even an opera.
