Little Men starts where Little Women left off. Jo is married to the German, Professor Bhaer, and has inherited her Aunt March’s estate, Plumfield. Professor Bhaer and Jo turn the estate into a school. The school has a variety of students: rich, orphaned, and of course, Jo’s own boys as well as some of her nieces and nephews. The story is told through the eyes of a young orphan, “Nat†Blake, a mildly troubled child who has a penchant for lying. The other children have their own problems to cope with. After the smashing success of Little Women, Alcott wrote a second bittersweet coming-of-age story in Little Men. There is humor and tension and some tears as Jo and Professor Bhaer lovingly attend to their motley crew. The characters are richly drawn and sympathetic, from Professor Bhaer’s rebellious nephew, to Meg’s daughter, the quiet and proper Daisy.
