The Peace sign was designed Gerald Holtom in the raging boom years of the 50’s. The world had just come out of WWII, business was booming, parents were giving their children more free time and love and peace had just started to become a movement.
With the war finished, nuclear disarmament was pushed heavily – this is where the peace symbol comes from – The vertical line in the center represents the semaphore flag signal for the letter D, and the downward lines on either side represent the semaphore signal for the letter N.
The sign is now accepted worldwide as the symbol of peace.
